Dear Mayor Mamdani and Speaker Menin,
We’re parents and caregivers across New York
New York City's free universal 3-K and Pre-K programs are a game changer for our families, saving us tens of thousands of dollars every year.
But most 3-K and Pre-K programs still end around 2:30 PM and operate only during the traditional school year. That leaves working parents left scrambling to find and pay out of pocket for after-school and summer child care - or cutting back their hours, turning down work, or leaving the workforce altogether.
Families shouldn't have to choose between earning a living and ensuring their children have safe, affordable, high-quality care. We need child care that reflects the realities of working families and covers the hours when parents actually need care.
We are asking you to include $735 million in the New York City budget to make every 3-K and Pre-K seat free, full-day, and full-year - from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., all year long.
New York families can’t wait. We need child care that actually works for working families.
